SPAM New Media Festival continues it's fifth annual festival at Indexical with performances by electronic percussionist Sunken Cages, collaborative duo Rohan Chandler & Scott Li, and artist / instrument builder Ava Koohbor.

Sunken Cages is the project of Indian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin. He has studied with US Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille and has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians including US Jazz legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (AACM/Chicago) and pop-star Shakira. In the past, he led Tarana, a shapeshifting global-Jazz group, on international and domestic stages for 14 years. His current collaborative projects include 'Turning Jewels Into Water' (with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty), a duo with dragonchild (Ethio-American saxophonist DA Mekonnen) and a trio with dancer Ishita Mili and video-artist Art Jones. He has recently produced tracks with South African Gqom group Phelimuncasi (Nyege Nyege Records), Saxophonist Maria Valencia (Meridian Brothers), producers Makossiri (Hakuna Kulala, Kenya), Saskia (QTV, Brazil), Kush Arora (Discrepant, US), Baba Sy (Jokkoo Collective, Spain/Senegal) and Rani Jambak (Indonesia, Yes No Wave.)

Rohan Chander is a media artist, electronic musician, and performance artist with an interest in recombinatory approaches to sound and aesthetic. Rooted in political and personal inquiry, he often draws from sample-based artforms, performance art, speculative fiction, and historical research. His work has been described as “hypersensory” (Washington Post), “remarkably alive” (The Wire Magazine), and of “transcendent metamorphosis” (I Care If You Listen). Under his solo DIY project BAKUDI SCREAM, I won the Gaudeamus Prize for Music Composition in 2022.

Scott Li is a NYC-based violinist, composer, producer, improviser, filmmaker, and electroacoustic sound artist blending the Romantic classical chamber music tradition with deeply emotive, boundary-pushing electronic music. Li‘s music is first and foremost epistolary—love letters to the world and the people around us, the memories we share, and the feelings we carry with us. Hailed by The Crossfader as “one of the pioneers of the next generation’s classical music”, Li’s work fuses visceral string playing, modular synthesis, live processing, fixed media, film, photography, dance, and poetry with a classical chamber music sensibility to “create a simultaneous understanding of The Beautiful and The Sublime, while exhibiting unparalleled emotional induction.” (The Crossfader, 2019) Half of the newly formed “Warp Duo” with electroacoustic improviser Levi Lu, Li is an explorer of haunting and ethereal sounds and a collaborator of a diverse group of musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, poets, and dancers, with work ranging from modern pop production to full-blown experimental noise music. Collaborations have included works premiered at New World Symphony’s BLUE Project series in 2022, The University of Michigan’s Dance Department alongside Vim Vigor Dance, as well as a commission from Pathos Percussion Trio. Li has performed at numerous renowned stages across the country, including the Park Avenue Armory, Big Ears, New World Symphony Center in Miami, REDCAT, Dripping, the Jazz Gallery in NYC, Rhizome DC and internationally at A L'ARME! Festival and Cologne Jazz Fest, supporting bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry. Li currently works at the Juilliard School as a full-time recording engineer.

Ava Koohbor works between sculpture and instrument, poetry and circuitry, memory and electronics, Tehran and San Francisco. Her practice explores sound as a field of relations, where listening, making, and material continually reorganize one another. Her work takes shape through instruments, performances, installations, exhibitions, and books. Her latest book, Of Flesh and Frequency: A Poetics of Sound Making, was published by Lithic Press in 2026.
