Indexical is thrilled to announce the formation of a new nonprofit organization dedicated to experimentation in music. Our new organization will host performances, workshops, and artist talks in Santa Cruz and elsewhere, with the aim to educate the public about the work of historically, culturally, and institutionally underrepresented artists.
Over the past three seasons, Indexical has presented over 40 events in Santa Cruz, ranging from premieres of acoustic chamber music to freely improvised electroacoustic work, and hands-on technical workshops to all-day outdoor festivals both downtown and on the beach. As a nonprofit with an expanded and more inclusive mission and organizational structure, Indexical will to embark on projects that would otherwise be impossible – and, critically, to work with artists in their efforts to do the same.
From Laura Steenberge, Board President:
“In the years that I have been involved with Indexical as a performer and composer, I have experienced firsthand the thought that they put into their programming and the care with which they consider the needs and interests of audience and performer alike. I believe in the power of live performance, and in the people organizing Indexical, and I am so excited to work with them to realize our shared vision.”
The coming year will include an expansion of Indexical’s programming into curated festivals and installations, releases of new work recorded in Santa Cruz, and a long-term vision that seeks to create a permanent and radical space for experimental arts and music in Santa Cruz County. Details of these projects are forthcoming.
Andrew C. Smith writes:
“Since the beginning, our work has grown out of a belief that music is inseparable from its context. We’re always striving to present work contextualized through discussions, interviews, and curation that is conscious of the extramusical world we all inhabit, and the expansion of our organization to include new voices is a critical step toward this commitment.”
